A retrospective exhibition of the works of KOGA Harue (1895 - 1933), a Western-style artist born in Kurume City who was active from the late Taisho through early Showa eras.
Koga avidly studied new schools of European art such as Cubism and surrealism, while simultaneously integrating considerable content from fields including literature and poetry. As a result his paintings show significant transformation over time, and this constant change remains one of the most fascinating features of his work.

In addition to his paintings, Koga also penned a number of poems with the same names, and this exhibition focuses attention on these literary works. Probing the key issue of how the artist perceives the relationship between the two forms of expression yields clues to better understand his artistic achievements. His creations show us his never-ending pursuit of new ideas and the change it engendered, but a core of warmth and gentility is constant... and so his work remains alive and beloved even today.
60 oils, 60 watercolors, 60 sketches and other materials, and 30 related items delineate the artistfs life and achievements.
* The exhibition of watercolors, sketches and other items will be displayed in two parts, the first from July 3 - August 1 and the second August 3 - September 5.
AOKI Shigeru's "A Good Catch" and SAKAMOTO Hanjiro's "Cow" will be on display in the Asian Gallery.
